Gone With the Wind Art

Pencil drawing of Gable and Leigh

Today I tried looking on deviantART to see what different takes people had on Gone With the Wind. I was surprised at some of the various ways people applied the story.

A lot of the art were drawings of scenes from the film, which wasn't too surprising. Some people added different effects to these scenes, like this picture mosaic.

Others took these scenes a step further by replacing Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh with their own characters.
Same pose, different characters

The very few depicted the story in a way that was very different from the film portrayal.

Very unique poses, scene is not immediately recognizable

What I found interesting was the focus on the iconic poses of the main characters from the 1939 film. Even when the artists replace the main characters, it's still obvious where they got their inspiration.

I also find it interesting that nearly all the art is focused on the relationship between Rhett and Scarlett. Maybe the reason Gone With the Wind is so influential in our culture is that people can somehow relate to Rhett and Scarlett. Both characters are out of place in their setting, but they understand one another. Their romance is very different than romance in most novels. Like real life, they commit at the wrong times, in the wrong ways; they have to figure out how to live with one another; they have to learn how to love each other. It doesn't happen in a day, a month, or a year.

Why do you think people are so fascinated by Rhett and Scarlett's relationship? What about them is so enchanting?
